The Seven Sacred Salai

According to Meitei mythology and historical texts like the Puya, the seven Salais were established by the supreme creator Sanamahi. Each Salai is identified by its Yumjao (clan surname), Lairik (sacred text), and Sagol (emblem).
Mangang
The Mangang is the first and most prominent of the seven Salais of the Meitei people. It is considered the ruling clan, historically associated with kingship, nobility, and the governance of Manipur.
Luwang
The Luwang is the second Salai, known for its scholarly traditions and administrative excellence. Members of this clan have historically served as ministers, advisors, and custodians of knowledge in the royal court.
Khuman
The Khuman is the third Salai, distinguished by its warrior heritage and martial traditions. This clan has produced some of the greatest generals and military strategists in Manipur's history.
Angom
The Angom is the fourth Salai, renowned for its artistic and cultural contributions. Members of this clan have been patrons of dance, music, and the visual arts throughout Manipur's history.
Moirang
The Moirang is the fifth Salai, historically linked to the ancient Moirang kingdom. This clan is celebrated for its connection to the legendary love story of Khamba and Thoibi.
Khaba Nganba
The Khaba Nganba is the sixth Salai, known for its spiritual and religious significance. Members of this clan have traditionally been associated with religious ceremonies and priesthood.
Sarang Leishangthem
The Sarang Leishangthem is the seventh Salai, recognized for its contributions to trade, commerce, and diplomacy. This clan has historically served as the bridge between Manipur and neighboring kingdoms.

What is a Salai?
A Salai is a patrilineal clan group in Meitei society. Each Salai consists of multiple Yumjao (surnames/family names). Membership is inherited through the father's line. The seven Salais together constitute the complete Meitei social structure.
Salai Hierarchy
While all seven Salais are considered equal in modern society, historically the Mangang held the highest position as the ruling clan. The hierarchical order was: Mangang, Luwang, Khuman, Angom, Moirang, Khaba Nganba, and Sarang Leishangthem.
Marriage Rules
Traditional Meitei society follows strict exogamous marriage rules — members of the same Salai cannot marry each other. Cross-Salai marriages strengthen inter-clan bonds and maintain genetic diversity within the community.
Yumjao System
Each Salai contains multiple Yumjao (surnames). For example, Mangang Salai includes surnames like Rajkumar, Ningombam, and Maisnam. The Yumjao system allows precise identification of one's lineage within a Salai.
