The History Behind SAGAI
The Meitei people of Manipur have one of the oldest and most structured clan systems in the world. The Sagai (ꯁꯒꯥꯢ) system, also known as Salai Taret (Seven Clans), forms the fundamental social structure of Meitei society, governing lineage, marriage, inheritance, and social identity for over two millennia.
According to Meitei mythology, the seven Salais — Mangang, Luwang, Khuman, Angom, Moirang, Khaba Nganba, and Sarang Leishangthem — were established by the divine creator Atiya Kuru Sidaba (Sanamahi). Each Salai traces its origin to a mythical ancestor and is associated with specific Yumjao (surname groups), sacred texts, and emblematic symbols that define its identity within the broader Meitei civilization.
